At Young Rembrandts, we believe art history opens children to a world of yet undiscovered treasures. Young Rembrandts' art history classes tell the stories of our past and demonstrate the significance of art throughout the world's history and cultures. In turn, children's horizons are broadened, their understanding and appreciation of art increases, and other learning is reinforced. Art History lessons include: Louis Comfort Tiffany who is famous for beautiful stained glass objects, the Capital Building complete with line detail. We will learn about the Navajo Indians and draw a replica Navajo blanket. Next we'll talk about Lewis and Clark who discovered the land and draw a scene full of layers and details. Taught in language children can understand, Young Rembrandts art history classes deepen children’s appreciation for art, and expose them to various images, vocabulary and cultures that expand their imaginations and their minds.

This fall we learn fundamental skills that will help us in other subjects. As we learn to draw different subject matter, we practice sophisticated art techniques. We draw a tree house complete with a ladder. We also learn to draw a patterned graphic drawing highlighting the sun and moon simultaneously. Next, we draw a still life to help us learn how to create a realistic drawing. In this lesson, we focus on shading and highlights and begin to master our color pencil technique. We also draw a creepy – but detailed – spider complete with a large web to catch its next meal. YUM! We see how the skills we learn one week help us the next! Each session offers new lessons that focus on artistic fundamentals for new students and provide engaging challenges for returning students.

This is a beginning geology course describing the three kinds of rocks, their formations, and uses. We will view examples in class of onyx, quartz, limestone, granite and more. The discussion of fossils will be in relation to the process living things undergo in order to fossilize. There will not be discussions regarding the age of the Earth or of the fossils. (Fossil examples will include sand dollar, shark teeth, and plants.) I'd like to plan 2 field trips: one to the free W. R. Keck museum at UNR and one to Crystal Peak. If possible, we hope to end the session with something for each student to take home like a polished stone in a keychain or piece of jewelry.

Instructor: Dennis Butterfield
Mr. Butterfield has taught strings in the Reno/Sparks area for over 25 years. Teaching at schools like Our Lady of the Snows and New Holt Christian Academy, he has also worked closely with the Reno Opera Orchestra. Dennis now has his own studio where he offers private lessons and keeps busy performing with various headliners when they come to perform in the Reno/Tahoe area. This class will focus on the violin, viola and cello. Multiple age groups pose no problem since he has developed a system that teaches children at their own pace. Note: due to the growing and changing needs of each child, Dennis recommends renting your instrument in the beginning.
Each child will need to purchase a music stand, which costs approximately $15.00 and beginning music books, which will cost approximately $25.00. Dennis will supply these items and you may pay him directly.
Due to the minimum number of students required, we recommend waiting until Sept. 5th to rent equipment or make any final purchases. IMPACT will know by Sept. 5th if the minimum requirements for this class are met. If not, participants will be notified immediately and offered other class options.

New and returning students are welcome. In this class, we will learn different stitches used in embroidery and learn to work with different colors. I compare learning stitches with learning the letters of the alphabet: once you know the letters, you can write anything you want. In the same way, once you know even just a few stitches, you can use them to create anything. After 12 years of teaching homeschool kids, I have developed a successful format. This class is informal, very enjoyable and there is no assigned homework. First time students will have a $5.00 materials fee over and above the class cost.

Would the Gettysburg address have had the same impact if Lincoln had said, 'Just over a hundred years ago, European immigrants formed a new government here,' instead of, 'Fourscore and seven years ago, our forefathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty'? Do you ever wish you could ask for a date, or ask to borrow your parents' car, in a way that increased the chance of the answer being 'yes'? Do you ever wish you could tell stories of ordinary events so that they seemed hysterically funny, or tragically sad? We'll be studying famous speeches and speakers, improv and memorization, and giving you plenty of opportunity to both perform and give feedback to others.
